"I chose the names Fluffy, Fluffball, and Fuzzy. Fluffball looks most like a fluffball and is the most fluffy. I'm excited to babysit the chicks because they're the first animal that I get to take care of that I can snuggle and hold. I've only had fish before. The chicks feel so fuzzy and soft and fluffy!"
Last Two Chicks Hatched Today!
These last two chicks hatched today. We will let several of the chicks visit via web camera for the next few days. The eggs hatched earlier than we had planned.
Many chicks are in the care of our Foster Chick Care Families. We will get reports about their experience over the next couple of weeks.

Seven have hatched since 8:30 Monday Night!
The chicks started hatching last night after the library closed. This morning we came in and two had hatched. Within minutes another had hatched all before the library opened at 9:30. We have had a lot of spectators cheering on the chicks as they hatch out of their shells.
We have moved the chicks to a warm brood box with a lamp, water and chick starter feed. Matching the chicks to their shells was a challenge. The Welsummer hatched from the nice brown egg. It has stripes down it's back like a chipmunk. The Buff Orphington looks a lot like the Ameraucannas so we may have mixed the shells up. One more Ameraucanna is in the Hatcher drying off. It hatched at 1:30 on Tuesday. Many more to hatch!

Eggs in the Hatcher and 26 Baby Chicks Arrive in the Mail!
Doug Akers arrived with eggs this morning that are due to hatch this week. He regulated the temperature in the Hatcher so that it maintained 95-100 degrees and added water to a bowl to create the proper humidity. Now we wait until the chicks are ready to peck out of their shell!
The Foster Chick Care families are waiting for their babies. 26 of the 50 have arrived by mail this morning. They will remain under observation until they are drinking, eating, and rested. One by one the trained Foster Chick parents will arrive to pick up their charges for the next two weeks.
Several chicks will remain at the library so that we can all watch them grow and change until May 15th.

Egg Hatching 2011 Begins May 2nd!
Where are the eggs that will be hatching at the library in May? They are in an incubator at Purdue University. When they are almost ready to hatch Doug Akers, our Extension Educator, will bring them to the Library in a warm Brood Box. We will watch them hatch May 2-7th. The week goes by fast! Make sure to stop by the Library or visit the Live Camera on our webpage.

Record Crowd at the 2010 Birthday Party Carnival
