Chicks get weighed in!

We weighed the chicks yesterday jellybean was 50 grams, peepy was 47 grams and toast was 41grams.

One Week Update

"All the chicks are doing well!  They have started trying to fly around the brood box!  Pep seems to be the boss, Dandelion is the most curious and friendly, and Slush eats a lot 😊 They all sleep in a row every night.  Pep has the smallest wings, Slush and Dandelion have bigger wings and have started to get their tail feathers, too.  Chicks poop a ton!  We are enjoying them and write a journal entry every night about them in our journals."

"The chicks are fun!  They are way bigger and very happy. Olivine does not like being held.  Ruby and Amber will very happily roost on my hand.  They like to climb on their food dish.  One of my cats is afraid of the chicks but my other two cats are very interested.  One even lays down next to the box and watches them."

More Updates from the Foster Families!

The our family loves our babies! They are so fun. He cleans the crate 3-4 times a day. 

I am blown away by his commitment to take care of these babies and his leadership in teaching others. 

He has been keeping a small journal/scrapbook that he will share.

They seem to get bigger every single day as well as more vocal and active!

The best part of having chicks is getting to play with them. The hardest part is having to clean up poop and trying not to step on their poop when we let them out to play.

I am surprised that they don't peep as loud as I thought they would and they don't sleep as much as we thought they would. I am also surprised that we can tell them apart by the type of fuzz they have. 

I've learned that they can be messy and curious. The funniest thing I saw them do was play "soccer" with a bug they found. Then they are it!

 Going great! What a wonderful experience! Wish even more kids could experience the 1st hand cuteness! The learning of how they gurgle-drink & fall asleep while standing & "cat-nap" is all interesting!

Updates from our Foster Chick Parents!

My Chicks are doing great! 

I love how they drink and scoop up the water with their mouths. I also think I know why people go through food so fast. When the chicks are eating they spill half of their food onto the ground, then when the person goes to clean the cage they pick up the food. After that the food dish is looks sort of empty so they fill it back up. 

I like to watch the chicks run around on the floor while my cat is watching them, trying to figure out what they are. I love when one of us ( my sisters and I ) get up to clean the cage, they all run and fly to follow us. Then we have a whole party of, get the chicks! I just have one concern. 

One of the chicks is getting pecked at and we did not put any nail polish or anything on her.

All 4 of our chicks are doing well, even the runt.  They seem happy.  We have had to clear off some vents, and the one larger umbilical cord fell off today.  So far, so good!

The kits were passed out and 10 families are ready to receive chicks next week.

Our Foster Chick Care Parents 2015

Our Foster Chick Care parents will be caring for these chick for about two weeks. They will share what they are learning and the pleasure of just caring for a new little life.  The chicks will return to go to local farm families.  We have a variety of brown egg laying breed chicks. The first challenge is to identify the breeds of chicks they have adopted!

 Can you guess by looking at the pictures? Don't get too distracted by the cute smiles of their foster parents.
